The Challenge

Hospital reimbursement for surgery is based on what is documented in the operative report; however, many operative reports are templatized and do not always reflect accurately what occurred during the procedure. The urology department at a large, US-based academic medical system performs >500 transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) procedures annually. The department was already using Theator’s technology for quality improvement and accelerated training and wanted to validate the video-generated operative report to the written operative report.

The Outcome

The urology department reviewed and compared the operative reports from 552 TURBT cases. One of the key components to drive reimbursement in this case is the tumor size. It was found that 21% of large bladder tumors were inaccurately classified as medium, which resulted in an increase of $162,288 in additional reimbursement.
