The Challenge

The health system sought to improve the quality of care and standardize surgical practices in sleeve gastrectomy procedures across 3 hospitals within the health system. However, the health system didn’t have visibility into all cases (laparoscopic and robotic) or analytics tools to drive a proactive quality initiative.

The Outcome

With Theator, this health system automatically captures and analyzes all robotic and laparoscopic bariatric procedures. This analysis includes 146 sleeve gastrectomies across 3 hospital sites within the health system. A key area for quality improvement surfaced – variability in the adoption of the intraoperative surgical practice of maintaining a distance of 1 cm from the angle of His during gastric transection. Initially, the adoption of this surgical practice was only 60%. After implementing a proactive quality initiative, the adoption rate had increased to 100% in only 8 months! The marked improvement in the adoption rate underscores the tangible benefits of integrating Theator to drive an actionable and effective quality initiative.
