Increase in surgical performance feedback

The Challenge

The urology department at a large, academic medical system has approximately 25 trainees any given year. In the past, the residency program director actively encouraged trainees to ask for feedback on surgical performance from attendings but struggled to gain traction.

The Outcome

This surgical department adopted Theator’s Surgical Intelligence Platform which has built-in evaluation tools and collaboration features for all recorded surgical videos. These components are integrated directly into the procedure page in the app, which has a fully annotated surgical video (all done automatically).

The feedback trainees actively sought and received from attendings and peers increased by 675% in January – June 2024 compared to the prior 6 months, July – December 2023. The driving force behind this increase was the commenting feature, followed by sharing the video, tagging colleagues, and completing evaluations.
