The Challenge

Clinical research is of keen interest to many surgeons at academic medical centers. It’s so important that most surgical trainees incorporate research years into their already years-long residencies to build their research capabilities and clinical skills. However, research initiatives are cumbersome and have long lead times. One key culprit is the availability of comprehensive, unbiased surgical data that can be easily analyzed to test hypotheses.

A department at a large, US-based academic medical center was interested in studying the applicability of artificial intelligence (AI) within urology surgery. To accelerate their research in this area, they adopted Theator’s Surgical Intelligence Platform to facilitate research studies.

The Outcome

Within 18 months, the department published six conference abstracts and four journal publications, including a publication in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). This highlights the ability to conduct a significant amount of high-quality research, in a short period of time.
