The Challenge
The medical director of a large medical center operating 8 hospitals is responsible for managing the quality and efficiency of surgery across all specialties. Reviewing cases where a complication occurred, or something happened out of the ordinary requires review by the medical director. However, the health system didn’t have a workflow in place that made this simple to do.
The Outcome
This health system adopted Theator’s Surgical Intelligence Platform in several of its eight hospitals. All surgeries are automatically recorded, structured, and analyzed. Outlier cases are identified by comparing components like duration, idle time, unique complications, and other components to the hospital’s surgery database.
Shortly after implementation, during a Transurethral Prostatectomy (TURP), a significant hemorrhage occurred requiring an unusual amount of irrigation and time to identify the source of the bleeding and manage it. This case immediately populated in Theator’s Flagged Cases section of the app, signaling the medical director to review and assess.
The automatic and systematic approach to identifying cases that require additional review and attention simplifies the process for this health system, ensuring these cases are reviewed timely and thoroughly.
