SURS 2022

Theator Case Study

First ever, real-time, AI-powered annotations during live surgery at the Society of Urologic Robotic Surgeons

Two procedures, broadcast live from Mount Sinai Hospital at SURS 2022 using Theator's Surgical Intelligence Platform.

Real-Time, AI-Powered Surgical Annotations

At SURS’ 1st Annual World Congress of Robotic Surgery 2022 two surgeries were broadcast live for the conference attendees.

What made these live streams unique? For the first time in history, the surgical feed included real-time, AI-powered annotations.

These annotations included surgical steps, intra-operative events, and surgical practices. The annotations were broadcast as they appeared during the surgery alongside the surgical video.

Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy live stream
Operation #1:

Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy

The first operation was a radical robotic prostatectomy.

The patient was a 62 YO male with a PSA of 4.7 and a biopsy Gleason 3+4 prostate cancer isolated to the left side with no prior surgical history.

The real-time AI annotations included surgical steps such as preparation, Retzius space dissection, seminal vesicles and posterior dissection, lateral and apical dissection, urethral dissection, and more.

The surgical practices annotations included the apical safety maneuver and deliberate views of structures such as the external Iliacs and the obturator nerve.

The operation took just over 2.5 hours and was completed successfully.

Operation #2:

Robotic Partial Nephrectomy

The second operation was a robotic partial nephrectomy performed by Dr. Ketan Badani.

The patient was a 33 YO male, with an incidental finding of a right renal mass of 3.4 cm, and no prior surgical history.

This operation was also broadcasted to the same auditorium, this time sparking a debate on the future of AI in surgery.

The real-time AI annotations included surgical steps such as preparation, dissection and mobilization, lesion resection, resection site closure and more.

The operation took a little under 2 hours and was also completed successfully.

Surgical Intelligence is already leveraging the data extracted from surgical video to generate insights that improve surgical outcomes.

Surgical Intelligence successfully showcased real-time AI annotations on two separate procedures during a urology conference for the first time ever. These annotations provide the technological groundwork to send real-time notifications to clinical or operational stakeholders.

In the future, this real-time understanding of surgery, can lay the foundation for real-time, intraoperative decision support leveraging big data to improve the quality of surgical care further.

‘Out-of-Body’ time in the OR

We analyzed ‘out of body time’ in 649 gynecologic procedures and saw a remarkably high amount of operative time spent with the camera outside the body.
